Maze runners? With used phones!

W e are in a foreign country. We need our google maps to navigate in the city of Brussels. We have charged our batteries to fullest and started a journey to the city centre. It was a beautiful day, brightened up with sunlight. M and I were excited to meet and catch up on stories. We stopped by a thrift shop. M bought a t-shirt and a lovely pair of leather gloves which are perfect for cycling in the winter. Very swiftly, we reached the city centre and met with another colleague M2. As time passed we visited a grand cathedral with church bells ringing. It was a perfect day...... well almost! Samsung Phone by https://www.facebook.com/mike.kavanagh.79 We carried old refurbished phones… M never bought a new phone. Like me, He grew up and went to university in a world without mobile phones. He started his reduce/reuse/repair journey about 30 years ago, so he never bought a new phone. Always pre-loved phones from friends who had bought new ones or second-hand reconditioned phones My story is

Where is the China Market in Ahmedabad City?

Repairing an old mobile is always a challenge. I collected an old Lenovo Vibe K5 Note from a relative. The speaker was fiddled-with in a botched-up repair surgery, later replacement of a part brought back the speakers of the phone. But it came at a cost of Rs 2500/-… My phone stopped charging. Now what do I do? Questions in my mind… Since the phone was not charging fully, my first reaction was to buy a 12Watt Veloce micro fast charger. But the phone still does not charge. Now I wonder if I need to change the USB cable. In my curiosity, I stumbled upon something… I remember seeing a mobile accessories shop near Siddi Syed Masjid at the western tip of Relief Road. The shopkeeper fiddled a bit with my phone and announces that the IC needs to be changed. I asked to give the phone back to me… I became irritated when I heard the IC word. This is invariably the reason given to nudge the customer to buy a new phone.  He returned it to me with a ‘as you wish’ look. Someone suggested to

Why repair cafe does not work here ?

Organising a repair cafe in a city where repair services are round the corner and knowledge of repair skills are not regarded highly… Repair cafe Bangalore has a pop-up format. So volunteers travel long distances to organize just a 3 hour workshop. For the collaboration with Azim Premji University (APU) (Physics Lab) volunteers travelled from across the city. Some ended up spending almost 12- hours of the day. The volunteers are passionate about repair and they are willing to go. On their part, the APU team is mindful of this travel pain and organised transport through cabs.  On the occasion of International Repair Day, worldwide organisations like Restart Project, The Repair Cafe Foundation and others advocate for Right to Repair Campaigns. In India, the Right to Repair is not recognized as a statutory right but courts and antitrust agencies have tacitly recognized this right. On our part as citizens we continue to organize the pop-up workshops to propagate the idea of repairing and d

Repair Cafe and Open minded faculties of Azim Premji University join hands and organise a Repair Workshop inside the University Campus. My Experience in a repair cafe workshop as a visitor

Hello, Myself with my wife and daughter joined repair workshop happened in Azim Premji University(sarjapur, bengaluru) on oct-15-2022.It was our first repair workshop and we brought many damaged stuffs( ironbox, weighing scale, bluetooth speaker, outdated laptop/tablet ) from our home as we are in the process of decluttering home. Photo: By Karthik (Repair Cafe BengaluruWorkshop@ Physics Lab) I have interest in DIY but lack a foundational understanding of how things work. Volunteers were really helpful and I would like to call out Jithendran sir's knowledge and teaching. He patiently answered all our questions and explained in layman terms. My wife and I were completely involved in diagnosing and repairing those items with him and other volunteers. Photo: By Karthik (repair cafe at work) For example,Ironbox we got from our home was having issues with sparking sometime. They helped us to dismantle it and guided us on how we could diagnose the problem ( it turned out that the iron b

3 tools which is a must in your teen's tool box...

#1 the Foot-ruler  The need to measure something is a day-to-day need. But very few act on it. I understood the measurement of [feet] when I went to learn swimming. The teacher said: Hey! do you realize that you can stand in 5 [feet] of water? Yes, I realized to myself. Also children are asked about their height and many struggle to answer in centimeters or feet. I observed a tailor, who with his experience, can measure the heights/ lengths / widths. It comes handy with practise. #2 Set of Screw-drivers This is probably the tool, I used most. It's really very easy to use it. But there is a skill involved in identifying the right type and size to fit the screw head. As a youngster (not that I am too old now) I would use a screw-driver to tighten a screw in a utensil. Many-a-times when I don't find the right size of screw-driver, the tendency is to do quick fix job. Eventually, I realized this harms the tool as well the screw heads. #3 Set of Spanners For those children into bi

3 Childhood memories of Repair

The tools (औज़ार )  Photo:(Repair Cafe Bengaluru) He had a set of tools, assortment of screws, nails, bolts, leftover strands of wires, old tapes and so on. It was kept in a small aluminium box which he painted with a motif of an elephant. On holiday at home, he could be seen repairing his old cooler or fixing a switch. Many times I observed his obsession for repairing and keeping household things, not buying new ones. That was my father. The Cobbler (मोची) Photo:(Repair Cafe Bengaluru) I grew up in a middle class neighbourhood where I visited a cobbler to repair my shoes, bags, belts and so on. Many would hardly notice her. She would be seen under a makeshift shade of an old, torn plastic supported by wooden pegs. She sits on a footpath surrounded with tools, shoes, scraps etc. She always has company. She talks and works. The Bartanwali ( बर्तनवाली) Photo:(Times of India) Old clothes were kept safely. When asked the answer was: kept to give away to the “ bartanwali ”. These are the lad
