15 - Oct-2022 Saturday Repair Cafe Foundation Bengaluru makes it a special day for many students of Azim Premji University, located in Sarjapura, Bangalore. Repair Cafe and Open minded faculties of Azim Premji University join hands and organise a Repair Workshop inside the University Campus. The workshop aims to introduce the concept of “Circular Economy and Sustainability” through the aspects of Repair, Reuse and Reduce.

Repair Cafe explains that students must be exposed to the Repair and Reuse concepts through live workshops, demonstrating ways to repair broken and/or malfunctioning articles, which we usually discard otherwise. Most mismanaged non-recyclable materials end up in open landfills. They are leading to hazardous disasters.

RepairCafe collaborates with faculties of the Univesity and conducts a Repair Workshop, Involving students in the session, teaching them the skills to fix their broken amenities such as bicycles, Laptops and software, smartphones and accessories like headphones, ear plugs, Bags repairing, Dress altering and Creating handy crafts.

6 highly enthusiastic volunteers from Repair Cafe Community take the initiatives to organise and conduct the workshop. These volunteers share a common goal to develop repairing skills in these students and help them to repair their amenities by themselves.

A few students from the Physics Club volunteered to help Repair cafe volunteers by taking pictures and videos, filling out application forms, noting participants’ Feedback etc…

Excited and eager to learn students repaired their, Bicycles, Broken Laptops and Laptops with Software Issues, including headphones, smartphones and other electronic gadgets. In fact, some of them got their old bags and learnt to recondition them. Old cloth alteration was done, and the participant began flaunting her fitted trendy cloth to her friends.

Almost every participant had one common question on their lips: When are you guys coming back again? manifesting their true inquisitiveness to learn, and curiosity to experiment.

Their joy of fixing things and making them function is typically something only a Repair Cafe volunteer can recognise. This is the fundamental driving force for these volunteers and for conducting many such events.

Some Facts and Figures:

Figures from 2016’s research and surveys estimate, that 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal waste are generated annually. India produces 277 million tonnes of municipal solid waste every year.

In India, 77% of the waste is dumped in open landfills, 18% turns into compost, and only 5% is recycled. In Developing countries, over 90% of the waste is dumped into landfills due to poor waste management systems, leading to higher emissions increasing pollution levels to dangerous levels and a higher risk of disaster.
